Recent Local Code Updates – Seattle Market

  • City of Seattle adopted the 2018 edition of IBC and 2019 edition of ASME A17.1 as part of 2018 Seattle Building Code (SBC)
  • State of Washington Labor & Industries Elevator Division is enacting the updated Chapter 296-96 of Washington Administrative Code (WAC) that is based on the same editions of ASME A17.1 and IBC as SBC this year.
  • Certain Cities, including Bellevue and Mercer Island, have already updated their Building Codes based on the 2018 edition of IBC.
  • State of Oregon Code in effect is the 2019 Oregon Structural Specialty Code (OSSC), which is based on the 2018 edition of IBC. Rule 918-400-0455 is the Oregon Elevator Specialty Code that is the referenced standard in the OSSC. It is based on the 2010 edition of ASME A17.1.
  • State of California adopted the 2004 edition of ASME A17.1 as part of Chapter 4 Division of Industrial Safety Standards Subchapter 6 Elevator Safety Orders. Many jurisdictions have adopted the 2018 edition of IBC.

    • Wiring requirements to machine/control room for monitoring/text messaging/camera vary between manufacturers.
    • Design layout of screen, camera, and fixtures vary. Integral with car operating fixtures vs. separate fixtures.
    • Certain solutions require monitoring/maintenance by a separate company in lieu of the elevator maintenance provider.
    • Continuing operating costs vary.
