1980 Founded in Livingston, NJ
John A. Van Deusen and Associates Inc. was founded in 1980, in Livingston, NJ. Within a few years, three additional principals - all industry experts with a depth of technical knowledge and diverse business experience - joined the firm and its reputation began to grow exponentially. By 1990, with a staff of eight and more than 550 projects completed, the firm became Van Deusen & Associates and moved to larger Livingston headquarters. Thirty years after its founding, now doing business as VDA, the company has worked on more than 15,000 projects, earning recognition as one of the world’s finest independent specialty consultants.

1982 Ahmet Tanyeri Joins VDA
Ahmet Tanyeri joined VDA (Van Deusen & Associates) as Vice President and Principal in 1982. He specializes in the engineering of building transportation systems and the design of material handling systems.
His sixteen years of experience in the vertical transportation field began with his position as Design Engineer for Curtis Elevator Company. He left there after two years to become Senior Project Engineer and later Associate and Department Head at Joseph R. Loring and Associates, Inc., where he remained for fourteen years.
1984 John W. Beckmann Joins VDA
Mr. Beckmann joined VDA in 1984 as a Principal and Vice President, with responsibility for projects involving equipment evaluations; maintenance quality control audits and modernization of existing equipment. As the company grew, he took on additional responsibility as the Principal in Charge of field operations, and also served Chief Operating Officer of the firm.
After completing the Elevator Industry’s Apprentice School, he began his fifteen year of related experience in new construction, major repairs and maintenance for Armor Elevator Company, Inc. Mr. Beckmann spent the next 12 years at Marcato Elevator Company, Inc. as a Manager of Repair Department and then as Vice President and General Manager of Operations.
He has coordinated research, developed new products and has overseen maintenance quality control for many of Van Deusen & Associates’ largest projects.
1986 Thomas Olenick Joined VDA
Thomas Olenick joined VDA in 1986 as a Vice President, and concentrated his 26 years of elevator experience on VDA’s existing building modernization projects. As a graduate of the Elevator Industry’s Apprentice School, Mr. Olenick began his building transportation career with Central Elevator Corporation. His past experience at the Central Elevator Corporation: included complete responsibility for the maintenance and repair departments, recommendations and proposals for new equipment and overhaul of existing equipment and determining routes and work load for profitability and work efficiency.
He has also been active in budget planning, grievance and arbitration hearings and forecasting. Mr. Olenick served as Vice President and Director of Operations for four years prior to joining VDA where he served as Principal and Executive Vice President. Mr. Olenick retired in 2011.
1987 VDA Opens Livingston, NJ HQ
In 1987, VDA moved to Livingston, NJ and established its Headquarters Office.
1989 Opens 1st Branch Office
This office was established in 1989 and has continued to provide service to the Middle Atlantic region including Pittsburgh, Wilmington, Baltimore and Washington, DC.
1999 VDA Opens Its 7th Office
VDA open’s new offices in Chicago, IL; Minneapolis, MN and Norwalk, CT.
2004 New York City Office Opens
In October 2004, VDA moved its former Long Island City office to Midtown Manhattan. The office serves all five boroughs, as well as VDA’s clients in Nassau and Suffolk counties. The office includes a full-time staff of 27 and provides full design and engineering services for new and modernized vertical transportation equipment, and Maintenance Quality Control Evaluations of existing equipment.
2009 Consults on The 1st LEED Platinum Building in the World
VDA provided full consulting services for the vertical transportation in this 2.1 million square foot, 54-story, ultra-energy-efficient building, which is the first high-rise office building to seek the LEED Platinum designation.
2010 Announces New Owners
In December 2010, VDA celebrated its 30th anniversary and announced four new owners. Led by Mike Smith,this group included Robert Cuzzi and Thomas Stack, all former Senior Vice-Presidents in the firm.
2011 Acquires Elevator Advisors, Inc.
(Atlanta, GA – November 23, 2011) VDA (Van Deusen and Associates) has acquired Atlanta based elevator consulting firm Elevator Advisors. This acquisition diversifies the Atlanta office’s portfolio and increases local representation. “We have acquired a very reputable and successful business…,” said VDA’s President M. Wade Smith. J. Robert Beyer, who served as President of Elevator Advisors, brings a wealth of knowledge and over 40 years of industry experience to VDA. “This new association will improve the level of services that Elevator Advisors’ clients have come to expect as I transition into retirement,” said Beyer.
2012 Opens San Francisco Office
In December 2012, VDA (Van Deusen & Associates) acquired San Francisco based elevator consulting firm Hesselberg, Keesee & Associates, Inc. The acquisition furthers VDA’s mission of developing and delivering vertical transportation solutions worldwide. The addition of Hesselberg, Keesee & Associates brought more than 50 years of industry experience to VDA.
The San Francisco office provides full consulting and design services for new construction, modernization and preventive maintenance related projects on all building types for clients across California, as well as providing construction administration and project support to VDA’s clients in Asia. A corporate staff of design/field engineers, administrative, marketing and accounting personnel, supports the San Francisco office.
2013 Opens Miami Office
VDA (Van Deusen & Associates) established the Miami office in 2013 to provide a local staff to assist the firm’s growing client base in the southeastern US. The office provides full design and engineering services for new and modernized building transportation equipment, and Maintenance Quality Control Evaluations of existing equipment.
2013 Opens New Smyrna Beach Office
VDA (Van Deusen & Associates) established the New Smyrna Beach office on July 1, 2013 to provide assistance to the growing client base in Central and Northern while supporting the firm’s ongoing operations in South Florida. VDA provides full design and engineering services for new equipment installations, modernization of existing equipment, maintenance quality control services and client-oriented Maintenance Contracts.
As Vice President of Business Development, Bill Bell and Senior Associate John O’Sullivan bring more than 70 years of industry experience to VDA. Together they are responsible for developing business opportunities and providing quality and cost effective consulting services in Florida.
2014 Opens St. Louis Office
VDA (Van Deusen & Associates) established the St. Louis office in 2014 to provide a local staff to assist the firm’s growing client base in the
mid-western U.S. The office provides full design and engineering services for new and modernized building transportation equipment, and Maintenance Quality Control Evaluations of existing equipment.
Mark Braun brings more than 25 years of industry experience to VDA. As a Senior Associate, Mr. Braun provides consulting services including equipment and maintenance quality control evaluations, writes equipment and maintenance specifications for new and existing vertical transportation equipment, and provides services during the construction administration phase. In addition, he serves as project manager on selected major contracts
2014 Opens Los Angeles Office
In May 2014, VDA (Van Deusen & Associates) opened its Los Angeles Area office. The office provides full consulting and design services for new construction, modernization and preventive maintenance related projects on all building types for clients across the West Coast. The Los Angeles office is fully supported by a corporate staff of design/field engineers, administrative, marketing and accounting personnel.
2014 VDA Moves HQ to East Hanover, NJ
In October 2014, VDA moved from its Livingston, NJ Headquarters after 27 years to 120 Eagle Rock Avenue, East Hanover, NJ. Situated on a beautifully landscaped corporate campus, the new space gives VDA the upgrades needed for its ever expanding operation.
