VDA Design Services Spotlight: Reimagining a New York Icon

Few buildings capture the spirit of New York quite like the Waldorf Astoria at 301 Park Avenue. Originally opened in 1931, the legendary hotel has hosted presidents, dignitaries, and celebrities for nearly a century. Now, following a transformative, multi-year renovation led by SOM and VDA’s support, the property has been reinvented, preserving its Art Deco legacy while introducing world-class residences and amenities for a new generation. 

Since joining the design team in 2016, VDA has led the vertical transportation design and consulting efforts. Across nine years of collaboration with architects, engineers, and ownership, VDA helped redefine how people experience movement within this iconic structure. 

The final scope included the design and modernization of 32 elevator and lift systems, including: 

• Six (6) new condominium passenger elevators 

• Two (2) new condominium service elevators 

• Six (6) new hotel passenger elevators 

• Four (4) new hotel service elevators 

• Two (2) new simplex passenger elevators 

• One (1) new kitchen elevator 

• One (1) new automobile elevator 

• Three (3) new private residence elevators 

• Three (3) new material lifts 

• Modernization of three (3) ballroom elevators 

• Modernization of one (1) existing automobile elevator 

Throughout the project’s many phases spanning ownership changes, financing challenges, and even pandemic-related delays, VDA remained a trusted partner from concept through completion. 

Design oversight was led by Michael Muñoz, who ensured seamless coordination between the design team and mechanical systems, while Bruce Mogg provided field expertise to bring those plans to life during construction. 

The result is a sophisticated and efficient elevator system befitting one of New York’s most storied addresses, a perfect balance of historic preservation, modern performance, and enduring elegance.
