CUNY Graduate Center

The project involved adaptive re-use of the former B. Altman’s department store at 365 Fifth Avenue, NY, a registered Landmark, to become the 582,000 sq. ft. CUNY Graduate School and University Center.

Public areas are located on the lower levels; the academic and research areas are located on the middle five floors and include classrooms, lecture halls, computer labs, offices and study areas. The top floors house administrative offices, a board room and conference center organized around a central dining facility.

There is also a 92,000 sq. ft. research library, occupying the entire second floor and parts of the ground and lower levels, that includes 1000 work stations and open shelving for over 250,000 periodicals. The library is served by the building’s original 3-stop hydraulic elevator that has been restored, incorporating the original ornamental metal panels into its new cab.

VDA also provided services for the addition of six (6) new 10-stop gearless passenger elevators, and a new service elevator with 11 front and 4 rear openings.
