The Shed formally known as the Hudson Yards Culture Shed is proposed to be the new central hub for innovative artists of New York City. Located on the far west side of Manhattan where the High Line meets Hudson Yards, The Shed will be housed in a 200,000-square-foot, six-level structure designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro in collaboration with Rockwell Group.
Planning to open in the Spring of 2019 The Shed will feature versatile spaces for the broadest range of performance, music, visual art, multi-disciplinary work, events and a free lab for early career local artists to experiment.
The Shed’s six-level fixed building includes two large scale, column-free galleries that provide 25,000 square feet of museum-quality space; a 500-seat theater, event and rehearsal space; and a free lab for early-career local artists to experiment. The building is able to expand and contract by rolling the telescoping shell on rails. When the shell is nested over the fixed building, the 20,000 square-foot plaza will be open public space that also can be used for outdoor programming.
VDA is performing consulting services for the design development through construction for this new multi-use cultural facility.
